Lunch Buddies: Tutor in Reading at Plainfield Elementary in Des Plaines
Who: HandsOn Suburban Chicago (HOSC) needs people aged 55 and over to join Senior Corps-RSVP, one of the nation's largest networks of volunteers, to help inspire a love of reading in low-income students. What: Supported by Senior Corps-RSVP, Lunch Buddies is an in-school tutoring program designed to promote favorable attitudes toward books. The program additionally strengthens the fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills of elementary school kids. Under the supervision of program staff and/or volunteer leaders, volunteers can enjoy lunch and work with small groups of first and second graders. Where and When: We are now accepting applications for spring 2020, which is expected to begin in January and run through May. Volunteer tutors are needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:10-1:00 PM at Plainfield Elementary School (1850 Plainfield Dr., Des Plaines, IL 60018). Choose and commit to one day or more per week for the school year. Applicants must be willing to undergo a background check. Mandatory orientation/training is TBD in early January. Why: Tutoring is a fun and rewarding experience. In addition to the satisfaction that comes with positively impacting those in need, volunteering in schools is an ideal way to meet new people, enhance your resume, and/or learn new skills.
