CHiL Mentor at Holmes Middle School (After School & Virtual)
CHiL Mentor at Holmes Middle School
CHiL (Cooper, Holmes, and London) aims to mitigate the inequities in education exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic by equipping low-income students with volunteer mentors to enable student engagement, socialization, and access to academic and emotional support.
Who: HandsOn Suburban Chicago (HOSC) needs caring and reliable community members like you to help high-needs students get on track to graduate! Because CHiL will take place online in spring 2020, volunteers must be 18 or older, have reliable access to both broadband internet and a computer with a camera, and have high computer literacy skills to be able to participate. Proficiency in Google products is a plus!
A mandatory orientation and training session will take place in January. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a background check.
What: CHiL is a volunteer-based afterschool program that provides social and emotional support coupled with homework help to low-income middle school students in Community Consolidated School District 21. Through video conferencing and under the direction of program staff, volunteer mentors will foster socialization among a small group of students; facilitate social and emotional learning activities; and guide their charges in completing schoolwork.
Where and When: CHiL will take place online and begin in the week of January 18th and go through March 18th. Volunteer mentors are needed on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 pm. Choose and commit to one day each week.
Why: Mentoring is a fun and rewarding experience. In addition to the satisfaction that comes with positively impacting those in need, volunteering in schools is an ideal way to meet new people, enhance your resume, and learn new skills. Mentoring at CHiL is also a great way for college and graduate students to gain field hours.
