PROJECT MISSION: To improve quality of life and care for residents of long-term care facilities throughout suburban Cook and Lake county communities.
PROJECT PURPOSE: To speak with residents and their family members at the facilities and to speak with concerned citizens in the community in order to empower residents so they are treated with respect, receive quality medical and personal care, are free to exercise self-determination. Educate residents, facility staff, and the public about long-term care residents’ rights and to advocate for individual and systemic improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS: Be at least 18 years of age; have the ability to travel to long-term care facilities; have a sincere interest in promoting the well-being and protecting the rights of people in long-term care; have the ability to discover facts alleged in complaints and objectively determine whether the complaints are verified or not verified; be able to work cooperatively with residents and staff to resolve complaints; successfully complete required training; dedicate at least 4 hours per month at assigned facility preferably for at least two years; attend quarterly meetings and training. No nursing home experience is necessary.
Volunteers choose their volunteer hours as Ombudsman have 24/7 access to the facilities as Certified Ombudsman. A background check is required through the Illinois State Police.
