Counselors: Educate, Counsel, Assist Older Adults--TRAINING PROVIDED!

COUNSELORS--Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP)

Assist older adults obtain Medicare benefits to maintain their independence!

TRAINING IS PROVIDED!

Kenneth Young Center (KYC) is a certified Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) site.  SHIP is a free, statewide health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.  Its purpose is to connect with beneficiaries who have limited incomes to help them save money on health care costs. SHIP is not an insurance plan; it is a free counseling service provided by the Illinois Department on Aging, through the annual prescription drug plan enrollment period.  SHIP volunteers do not sell or solicit insurance.

SHIP trains volunteer counselors throughout the State of Illinois to provide one-on-one help with a Medicare-beneficiary’s insurance options. The SHIP Volunteer Team is developed to increase our capacity to educate, counsel and assist Illinois Medicare Beneficiaries. The volunteer interacts with a Medicare client, typically an older adult, and/or the client’s representative caregiver. The counselor’s experience can have a meaningful impact on the lives of Medicare beneficiaries in our state.

As a SHIP Counselor, you need to be very comfortable working with Microsoft Excel, Word, and the Internet. You will work with local older adults and their loved ones to explain and assist them in completing State, Federal and civic benefits program applications. We will train volunteers on the benefits application process so you do not have to have prior knowledge of state/federal benefits. However, previous experience is HIGHLY DESIRED! A few key points:

  • Volunteers must be available to perform services during normal business hours.
  • During COVID, training is done off-site via Internet/Zoom-sessions during normal work-week. Sessions may take a number of days for completion.
  • GREAT opportunity for recently retired professionals.
  • This is a Skill Based Volunteer (SBV) Opportunity. Experience working or interacting with older adults is highly desired.
