Power Employment Workshop Presenter

Volunteer presenters are needed to assist Business and Career Services (BCS) and with their award-winning “Power Employment” workshop designed to give job seekers “the Edge” when seeking employment.  Volunteers will present one or more of the following workshop modules:  Smart Goal setting, Advanced Job Search Techniques, Resume Writing and Interviewing.  All workshops are PowerPoint presentations, often presented in conjunction with another volunteer presenter.   Volunteers receive an initial orientation to the goals of the program and are then directed to observe and audit two Power Employment area workshops before presenting.  Additionally, volunteers are required to attend a monthly evening training meeting at the Schaumburg Library.  Here, job search best practices are discussed, and approved classroom flyers and training materials are passed out.  At this meeting, volunteers also benefit from hearing and networking with guest speakers, often local employers with jobs. Power Employment workshops are presented Monday - Friday from 9:30am - 3:30pm at local Northwest Cook County libraries and BSC offices in Arlington Heights, Hanover Park and Robbins. Volunteers will schedule their availability after completion of their audit of Power Employment workshops.  This is a great opportunity to develop superior presentation skills, build confidence by assuming a leadership role, as well as eliminate gaps in the resume.  Volunteers also land about 50% faster, since they are always teaching others how to find a job. To qualify for this volunteer opportunity, you do not have to be a trainer, speaker or sales professional. But it is recommended that minimally you have successfully conducted and lead a group in discussion.  Ideally, volunteers have also given a presentation to a work unit or other group, can communicate effectively with audiences, as well as present a professional image to represent BCS in this helping and teaching role.     There are also additional volunteering opportunities, such as helping at area Job Fairs and some administrative projects.  But our biggest ongoing need is for volunteer presenters to present “Power Employment.” This is a Skill Based Volunteer (SBV) opportunity.
